GERM! A Quick Overview of 100Fold Creative Process
GERM! A Quick Overview of 100Fold Creative Process
The idea and work for 100Fold began in 2018 but came to the state it is now in 2020.
Opportunity Framing
Project Guidelines:
- Deliver unique and honestly dope music
- Find the audience that connects with said music and put it in front of them
Challenges:
- Music has evolved so quickly and users are always searching for unique but cohesive sounds. 1 challenge was figuring out how to sound cohesive when 100Fold members have varying skills and backgrounds; our members have backgrounds before 100Fold in Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, Classical, House
Ideate
- To address the first challenge I created process where we would connect on zoom and create and present music. To ensure some level of uniformity each member started with the same 20-30 second loop of music known as a sample and was instructed to create from that. This way each track would at least have the same "bones"
- This is a link to our first sample challenge to get an idea of how this process worked! Each track except for the one labeled "sample" was our own interpretation of the sample. I personally created the one labeled "Pete-LT" (warning profanity) but my favorite is "Let Me Be The One Sample Challenge - Dont Panic"
- LT's contribution: I created the process and led us through numerous tests of it and improved on it over time
Prototype
- After a few times of doing the process I created above we found a rhythm and decided we would release our own project. To create the actual music we would start with one idea and let each member decide if they wanted to add more to it
- An example of this is our track Bouncy System. I created an original song that I thought would be a good fit for the tape and presented it to the group. We collectively decided that it needed more energy so we would create a new beat entirely but keep the same vocals
- Here is the original demo.
- Here is the final song with the video LINK
- LT's contribution: I created the original demo solely and created the updated song and video in collaboration with one other member with equally split work
Test
- We did this same process with our other tracks and even took a trip to meet up for the first time in person in Portland Oregon to finalize the project
Finalize
- We released our first first project to fanfare from publications such as Pitchfork, Aurison, etc
- The reception was so much bigger than we expected that got our first record deal from this and had our first Sold-Out Show in NYC
Key Takeaway:
- I co-founded a group that started 100% remote and took what many thought were disjointed backgrounds and was one of the leading creators in an innovative project that has landed us a record deal and partnerships with The NFL, and AppleTV all in one year.
- Keep Creating
